In this post, I will tell you about how to use the correct sitemap for your Blogspot website for getting organic traffic for your blog or website.
This post is meant specifically for all those who are using Blogger platform (blogspot.com domain).
What is Sitemap?
If you want to rank your article in the organic search results, you need to show the search engine a way to tell them what your website offers to the people. A Sitemap is an XML/HTML file that contains all the links/URLs of the pages present on your website. It is helpful for search engines to find your website and detect new pages as they are created, modified, and deleted. If you are worried that why Google is not showing your blog, you should consider to add sitemap to blogger.
Adding Sitemap to Google Search Console
It is also necessary to add Sitemap to Google Search Console. For those who don't know about it, Google Search Console is a service by Google which allows users to check indexing and visibility of their pages in Google search results. It also tells about important errors in your website detected by Google. Adding a sitemap is a vital step for your blog detection by search engines. Alternatively, you should also add your sitemap in Bing Webmasters for more impressions and clicks.
Add Sitemap to Blogger and Submit to Google Search Console
Method 1: Using New Blogger Sitemap. Blogger now creates a default sitemap for every website. It can be accessed as:-
http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/sitemap.xml
OR Custom Domain
http://yourblogname.domain/sitemap.xml
Now login to Google Search Console. Simply add your sitemap to Google Search console. Simply add the above sitemap URL for your blog here
Method 2: You can also set up your own custom sitemap settings for your blog using Robots.txt. Here is the procedure for the same:-
- Go to your Blogger Dashboard
- Go to Settings
- Click on Enable Robots.txt file under "Crawlers and Indexing" Heading
- Now click on "Custom Robots.txt" and save the below lines
User-agent: *
Disallow: /search
Allow: /
Sitemap: https://www.discussbytes.in/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
Here replace "www.discussbytes.in "with your website name and you are all set. Remember that you need to add another URL if your blogger post exceeds 500.
Example if I have 510 posts then I have to add the following lines:-
User-agent: *
Disallow: /search
Allow: /
Sitemap: https://www.discussbytes.in/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
Sitemap: https://www.discussbytes.in/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=501&max-results=500
Similarly, you need to add another URL after every 500 unique posts. Now add sitemap URL in Google Search Console and you are all set.
If you have a problem regarding sitemap code for your blog, you can also use this tool to generate blogger sitemap XML.
Similarly, you can also add sitemap to Bing Webmasters. This is all about how you can create a sitemap for Blogspot.
