Microsoft announced new surface devices in its Surface event consisting of Surface Pro X, Surface Pro 7, Surface Laptop 3, Surface Neo and Surface Duo. Here are main focus is on Surface Duo with Neo and Windows 10x.
Microsoft Surface Duo is a foldable device and run Android apps. Microsoft will also use its own set of customization though the software used is still Android. There are some reports that it will run a customized version of Android with Windows 10x support. Microsoft prevents to call it a phone while it has open new opportunity for Microsoft to re-establish it in smartphone market.
Windows mobile has been long abandoned. Windows 10x is the new OS introduced keeping in mind the requirements of foldable devices. It will be powering new foldable devices by several OEM in later 2020. It will be powering Surface Neo which will come with a bigger display. This time gap in release will also enable developers to develop Windows 10x and apps for the device.
Duo will come in holiday 2020 and previewing it a year before is a well thought decision. Microsoft is trying to build hype for its new category of devices. It also needs improvements- like there is a only one camera in the device for which you have to rotate the device 360 degree. Software implementation is a tough task too. Microsoft has decided to use Android but it seems that it will get modified greatly as seem from the promo video. The video also states that software, hardware and other things are subject to change since it is under development. I will be really interested to see the software utilisation in Duo. There is still less known about Microsoft Google deal on Android and I hope that soon the situation will get better.
Overall it is a sigh of relief for all those Windows fans (including me) who kept dreaming of a phone from Microsoft. Though Windows 10 mobile is not coming back but still Windows 10x has infused new hope for fans. I would be more happy if Microsoft somehow enables Android apps and uses Windows 10x.
Microsoft can be pioneers of foldable devices if it manages to impress masses with its Surface Duo, Neo and Windows 10x. I really miss Windows phone and I think Microsoft somehow missed that chance to compete with the likes of Android and iOS.
